Capt. Henry Roberts, son of Richard Roberts and Elizabeth Doty was the oldest of several children. He bought a farm on Rattle Creek, Washington co., Va. just before he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Warren.
He made a down payment on the farm and agreed to pay the balance in produce and meat at Abingdon market prices.. From that small beginning he became one of the wealthier men in Washington co. He was a Captain in the Reserves during the Civil War.. Two of his sons fought in the war, John and David. David was killed.....


Home of Henry Roberts in Rich Valley, Washington co., Va.  This house is still in use today. Henry left this home and about five acres to his second wife, Mary Piper Roberts, in his will. It was sold when she died.. Henry and Betsy Warren Roberts were buried in the Arnold- Roberts Cemetery on Rattle Creek about one half mile from this house..
Mary Piper Roberts was buried beside her first husband on the Piper farm near Abingdon, Va..

 

 

Margaret Roberts Hagy, daughter of Henry Roberts and Elizabeth Warren, was a spinster. She had several spinning wheels, looms, knitting machines and other textile equipment. She married but had no children, however when her brother Johns wife died,  she raised his son, John Henry Roberts.. Aunt "Marg" Hagy built a house and lived about one half mile below her father in Rich Valley..
She was severely burned when she dumped an apron of bean hulls into the fireplace and her clothes caught fire. She died shortly afterwards..


John "Pegleg" Roberts started the first school at Greendale and it later became Greendale High School..  John was called "Pegleg" because his leg was amputated during the Civil War.. He represented his district in the Virginia House of Representatives two terms and was Commissioner of Revenue for Washington co., Va. for forty years.. He is buried in the Hearl-Hagy Cemetery at Greendale, Va. back of the old Greendale High School building..

Mary Jane Roberts, d/o Henry Roberts and Elizabeth "Besty" Warren married Joseph Hamalton Heral s/o Hugh Heral and Lydia Charlotte McIntire of Mitchell County, NC.
They had two children, Milton Houston Heral and Mary Jane Heral. Mary Jane Heral died at birth. Both are buried on the Heral farm on Rattle Creek.. GLH
